An ageing population is a factual reality. As a matter of fact, APAN (Assocjazzjoni Pensjonanti u Anzjani Nazzjonalisti) held a conference on the 27th of October 2016 to promote active ageing and to also keep these senior citizens informed about what really concerns them when they reach this stage in their life. In fact, the team of the conference focused exclusively on the position of the elderly in Maltese society.
The organisers invited Dr Joseph Giglio from Lex Practis in order to give an overview in a simplified manner of the different laws enacted in order to provide for their safety and well being.
During this conference, Dr Giglio dealt with various legal instruments that cater for the elderly. However, his focus was on the recent Act that has been enacted by Parliament, which created the role of the Commissioner for the Elderly. The main aim behind this new enactment is to promote active ageing, to ensure that all senior citizens are living in a decent and humane manner and to also safeguard the fundamental principles of human rights in so far as senior citizens are concerned.
